Commerce, California is a small but dynamic city in southeast Los Angeles County, incorporated in 1960. Known as “The Model City,” Commerce spans about 6.53 sq mi (16.92 km²) with a population of roughly 12,378 (2020 Census). It’s bordered by Vernon, East Los Angeles, Montebello, Downey, Bell Gardens, and Los Angeles.
The city is well connected by freeways (I-5, I-710) and served by Metrolink commuter rail via the Commerce station. Because of its industrial roots and strategic location near the ports, Commerce plays a vital role in the region’s logistics and goods distribution.
Commerce’s municipal government funds many services in part from revenue generated by the Commerce Casino and the Citadel Outlets — two of the city’s biggest landmarks. The city also offers free local bus service, parks, libraries, and recreation programs through its Parks & Recreation Department.
